About this tour

From heavy industry, landfill and chemical factories to an extensive urban renewal, recreational harbour park and award-winning architecture. Amager is part of Copenhagen and yet its very own.

With an area of almost 100 km2, the largest island in the Oresund strait is not only great in size but also in its distinctive local status as a proud neighbourhood, where many identify as “Amagericans” rather than as Copenhageners. The presence of a local patriotism is remarkable and not least understandable once you experience the unique metropolitan atmosphere that Amager offers with magnificent nature and world-class architecture just around the corner.“Copenhagen’s Manhattan” – or ”Lorteøen” (Shit Island), which is a name that has stuck for years due to Amager being used as a place to dump the city’s latrines back in the late 1800s - has experienced a rapid growth over the years.

Amager, including Islands Brygge and Ørestad, has attracted both Copenhageners and tourists with iconic attractions such as DR Koncerthuset, The Tietgen Residence Hall, The University of Copenhagen, 8 House by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Amager Nature Park. The fact that the metro runs right to the doorstep of many of these sights does not make the island less attractive.

Whether you choose to experience Amager by metro, bike or walk, you are guaranteed a wonderful time.
