Fredericia was built as a fortress to defend against enemy forces invading from the south. It was a monumental construction, requiring the movement of 1,000,000 cubic meters of earth using only shovels and wheelbarrows. The fortress's strategic importance became clear soon after its completion. In 1657, Swedish troops laid siege and captured the town. After the war, Fredericia had to be rebuilt almost entirely from scratch.
The fortress reached its peak significance in 1849 during the civil war between Denmark and the duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. Prussia supported the duchies, leaving the Danish army heavily outnumbered. By spring 1849, Fredericia was once again under siege. Facing a dire situation, Danish generals crafted a daring plan: a nighttime counterattack.
